Hobo hello from Hanoi

Hi all,
Just want to say hi from Hanoi...have very much enjoyed hobo-ing around southeast Asia despite the heat. I've been catching up on the internets now that I'm back in a city and I have to say, between the schedule, the great T-shirt design (I'm ordering one!) my bro's poetry, and all your comments, I am feeling a little nostalgic and sad that I will miss the festivities this year.

So just wanted to throw in my 2 cents to wish you all a safe and stupendous Hobonanza. Keep putting some stupid fun into the 4th of July and hoist a few for me! Really, it's quite admirable and unique to have such a cohesive and diverse group of friends who make a huge effort to get together, make some fun, and keep the faith. Community is where/what you make it and tradition is an evolutionary process. Three cheers for those who make it KEY :)

Cheers,
-Molls

Check it out...the Duke business school is doing a mustache contest. Apparently the HOBO effort to bring back the 'stache is spreading!

Shout out to my HOBO's outside Cameron Indoor Stadium

Check out the picture I attached (I don't know how to make the pic show up directly on the page...can anyone give me some help?)

We're tenting outside the stadium for the Duke v. UNC game on Wednesday...and it's like 15-20 degrees overnight, which is ridiculous for the South. Fortunately, those of us from up North are hardy and can take the extremes.

HOBO Fit Club/Hometown Run 2007

In the spirit of the HOBO Fit Club, is anyone interested in training for the 4th of July Hometown Run? I noticed that at least a few people wanted to add some cardio/running to their fitness goals and this would be a great incentive. It's always easier to keep to the plan when there's something to shoot for!

The Hometown Run has 10K (6.2 miles) and 2 Mile divisions and it's usually the morning after the Half Year's party, early enough in the 4th of July festivities that you can pace yourself for one night, run the race, and then go nuts the rest of the week. Last year I went out, drank a few, got up in the morning, ran the race, and let me tell you that the Miller Lite and chicken wings afterwards tasted damn good!

If enough people are in, we could even start the race as a team/group with silly T-shirts or hats or something to identify us as HOBOs. Both runs start at the same spot/same time, and those who finish first can be at the finish to cheer on the rest of the group. It'd be fun :)

More HOBO philosophy...

In the spirit of Show and G-mac's contributions (and a tip of the hat to our favorite English teacher and Steinbeck fan), I humbly submit the following:

"I have always lived violently, drunk hugely, eaten too much or not at all, slept around the clock or missed two nights of sleeping, worked too long and too hard in glory, or slobbed for a time in utter laziness. I've lifted, pulled, chopped, climbed, made love with joy and taken my hangovers as a consequence, not as a punishment. I did not want to surrender fierceness for a small gain in yardage."

                                          -John Steinbeck

HOBO representing at Campout

So this coming weekend will be my third annual 36-hour campout for the basketball ticket lottery at my school-which-shall-not-be-named. This basically involves 1000+ graduate students camping in a field on the athletic campus from Friday evening till Sunday morning during which we drink a lot of beer, play a lot of silly games, dance to the DJ, sleep very little, and have to respond 24/7 to random whistle checks. Missing more than one check-in means you are out of the lottery for tickets, so when the whistle blows for the third time in 30 minutes at 4 a.m., you grumble and curse, but roll out so as to stay in the running for that elusive spot in the Cathedral of NCAA Basketball. Luckily, thanks to the HOBO 4th festivities, I am in peak shape for minimal sleep/maximal silliness.

The atmosphere of Campout can best be described as a refugee camp-meets-Mardi Gras. There is field full of tents (common folks), a lot full of UHaul trucks (middle class folks) and the lot full of RV's (high-rent Law and MBA students) but it's all a sea of kegs, coolers and grills, Beirut tables, Polish horseshoes, flip cups, and people getting stupid. I am a stauch supporter of the tent area, because it's more egalitarian, more laid back, and it's just keeping it real. You could almost imagine it as overnight tailgating. Anyone can party in a parking lot for a few hours, but it takes a true talent to keep up the intensity through two overnights.

This year I will be on the lookout for new fun games-you-can-play-with-a-beer-in-one-hand and following on the 4th of July experience, I will report back with pictures and descriptions (to the best of my ability to recall events). Drunk dialing and picture mail will probably also flow freely. I promise to represent the HOBOs well...
